Billikens Edged in Regular-Season Finale

Nov. 3, 2007

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Sam Huecker scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute, and the Charlotte defense allowed just three shots as the 49ers captured the Atlantic 10 women's soccer regular-season championship with a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Saturday.

Huecker gathered a loose ball just inside the 18-yard marker and fired a shot that eluded Billikens' goalkeeper Hannah Koesterer at the 15:56 mark. The goal was Huecker's sixth of the season.

Saint Louis, which slipped to 10-5-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the A-10, just couldn't generate many offensive opportunities against a Charlotte defense that came in with a league-best 0.60 goals-against average. Susan Frederickson collected two of the Billikens' three shots, including one on goal, and Ashley Brazill had the other. Meanwhile, the 49ers (14-4-1, 9-1-1) collected 11 shots and earned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Koesterer made five saves for the Billikens, who will learn of their seeding for next week's Atlantic 10 Championship tournament on Sunday. Depending on the outcome of games involving Duquesne and Fordham, Saint Louis, the two-time defending tournament champion, will be either the No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament that begins on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Charlotte. Should the Billikens land the No. 2 seed, they would receive a first-round bye and play in the semifinals on Friday.
