KINGSTON, R.I. -
Saint Louis completed the season sweep of Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island on Sunday with a 30-22, 30-27, 30-22 victory. With the win, the Billikens improve to 20-6 overall and 9-3 in the A-10.
In game one, neither team led by more than two points until SLU began to pull away midway through the contest. With the Bills up 15-14, Sutton Lasater and Whitney Roth turned in back-to-back kills for a three-point edge. They then took advantage of a number of Rams hitting errors to run out to a 23-16 lead. SLU never let its lead slip to fewer than six points as it claimed the game-one victory behind Sammi McCloud's five kills.
Game two was much like the opener, only it was Rhode Island (13-13, 5-6 A-10) that pulled ahead near the middle of the game. With the score tied at 13-13, the Rams scored five of the next six points on three kills, a service ace and a Billiken hitting error for a four-point lead. After regrouping during a timeout, SLU got three kills from Bridget Fonke, one from Roth and a Megan Boken ace to go up 19-18. Following two Rhode Island points, the Bills went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. The Rams closed to within two points on two occasions but SLU still came away with the 2-0 lead. Fonke and Lasater each had a game-high five kills.
Except for a 1-1 tie early in game three, Saint Louis led throughout the entire final game. The Bills hit a match-high .444 while holding the Rams to a .278 clip. Lauren Christman, Sally Warning and Fonke had five kills apiece.
Fonke recorded a match-high 13 kills while Christman followed with 11. Lasater, McCloud and Warning had 10 apiece. Roth dished out 44 assists while Whitney Behrens posted a season-high tying 21 digs. Lauren McIntosh led the Rams with 10 kills.
SLU wraps up the regular season next weekend when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on Pitt on Nov. 9 and Duquesne on Nov. 10.
