Billikens Knock Off New Orleans

BATON ROUGE, La. - Saint Louis faced more of a challenge in its second game at the Mizuno Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La., but its opponent was still no match as the Billiken volleyball team downed New Orleans 30-22, 30-23, 30-19 to move to 2-0 on the season.

After trading points to the 10-10 mark, the Bills began to pull away when the Privateers committed some attacking errors and SLU got kills from Bridget Fonke (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Joseph's) and Sally Warning (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly). The Billikens continued to expand the lead and Sutton Lasater (St. Louis, Mo. / Marquette) sealed the match with a pair of kills for the 30-22 win.

SLU had to overcome a 5-0 deficit to begin game two. The Bills tried to regroup but UNO held onto the lead throughout much of the first part of the game. Kills by Lasater, Sammi McCloud (Columbia, Ill. / Columbia) and Whitney Roth (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) kill helped Saint Louis pull even at 18-18. SLU took the lead for good on kill by McCloud and never looked back en route to a 30-23 victory.

Saint Louis dominated from the start of game three while the Privateers struggled offensively, hitting at a negative percentage for the game. The Bills hit .136 and led throughout for the 30-19 decision.

Fonke led the Bills with 11 kills while McCloud added nine and Warning had eight. Saint Louis held New Orleans to a .036 hitting percentage for the match.

SLU returns to the court at 7 p.m. for a match against #23 LSU.
