ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis topped the visiting St. Bonaventure Bonnies 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer action at Robert R. Hermann this afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Waeckerle scored the game winner in the 53rd minute, and senior midfielder Mary Green scorched a 30-yarder into the back of the goal with 10 minutes remaining for the insurance marker. The Bills improve to 5-3-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in A-10 play.
The game was scoreless until Waeckerle put the Billikens on the scoreboard at the 52:10 mark of the second half. She took possession of the ball near the right top corner of the box, and dribbled into the box looking for a shot. She sent a ball aimed for the far left post, which beat SBU goalie Amanda Prestigiacomo for the 1-0 Billiken lead. The unassisted goal was Waeckerle's second of the year.
Green gave the Billikens some breathing room when she unleashed a rocket from 30 yards to put the Bills up 2-0. The laser tucked just under the crossbar and just out of the reach of a sprawling Prestigiacomo. The unassisted tally was Green's second of the season.
The scoring output came after the Billikens dictated play in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net. Freshman midfielder Alyssa Mautz generated a chance early on when she made a nice run up the middle of the field. She sent a pass to senior forward Cassi Winchell, who fired toward the goal but had her shot deflected wide by an SBU defender.
Midway through the first half, the Billikens nearly connected on one of their four corners in the stanza. Winchell sent a great ball into the box, and junior back Lauren Olson headed the ball to the right side. The shot beat Prestigiacomo, but a Bonnie defender that was parked at the far post cleared the ball out of harm's way. Later, after a run up the right flank, Winchell again sent a perfectly flighted ball into the box that Lauren Bozesky deflected just wide of the left post. SBU's (3-6-2, 0-2-0 A-10) two lone shots on goal came off dead balls that SLU starter Dominque Turk easily corralled to preserve the shutout.
Overall, the Billikens out-shot SBU 21-4 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Turk made two saves for her second-straight shutout.
The Billikens put their perfect conference record on the line when they travel to Philadelphia next weekend. SLU faces A-10 foes Temple and Saint Joseph's on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
