Billikens Fall in Overtime

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass' Mark DeSantis scored a golden goal with less than two minutes left in the second overtime to give the Minutemen a 2-1 victory over the 10th-ranked Saint Louis Billikens in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action Friday afternoon.

Saint Louis, which will attempt to wrap up an A-10 Tournament spot on Sunday when it plays at Rhode Island, dips to 9-3-5 overall and 5-3-0 in the A-10. UMass extends its seven-match unbeaten streak and is now 8-6-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the league. It is the second straight season the Minutemen have topped the Billikens in the regular season.

"I'm obviously disappointed with the result, but our guys battled and played well," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "After allowing a first-half goal, we continued to play and did a nice job of getting the game-tying goal. However, it's discouraging that we even gave them a chance so late in overtime."

DeSantis' game winner, which came at the 108:44 mark, came after SLU junior forward Jimmy Holmes notched the equalizer with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation. In a scramble in the box, Holmes sent a shot in that found its way through traffic to beat UMass keeper Zack Simmons. James Jaramillo assisted on the goal. It was Holmes' third tally of the season and his third in the last four games.

The Minutemen jumped on top 1-0 with a first-half tally by Andrew Henshaw. On a corner kick, Ben Arikian lifted a ball to the far post, where Henshaw managed to get a head on it and sneak it past SLU keeper Pat Disbennett.

Both teams managed 12 shots in the game, while the Billikens had a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks. Disbennett made four saves for SLU, while Simmons stopped three shots.

The Billikens face Rhode Island in their regular-season finale on Sunday in a noon (CT) kickoff. Both teams will be attempting to solidify a slot in the six-team Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Championship, which is set for next weekend at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
