Guerra Reaches Doubles Mark in 7-5 Loss

May 4, 2008

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore second baseman Andrew Guerra went 4-for-4, which included a pair of doubles to break SLU's single-season record, but Saint Louis fell 7-5 against Richmond in the rubber match of a three-game set at Pitt Field on Sunday.

With the loss, Saint Louis dips to 22-25 overall and 7-15 in the A-10, while Richmond improves to 18-25-2 overall and 9-11-1 in the league.

Including his two doubles today, Guerra now has 20 for his career, which bests the previous single-season record of 18 held by Jason Boehlow in 1992.

After Richmond plated a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple by Hank Coogan, the Billikens tied things up in the top of the second. Guerra, the lead-off hitter in the inning, lifted a Jared Bard pitch over the left-field fence to knot the score at 1-1. It was Guerra's team-high tying fifth homer of the season.

The Billikens took the lead in the third inning. Ziggy Moore started the frame with a single, then advanced to third on a base hit by Ryan Bennett. J.D. Dunn then drove home Moore with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

Saint Louis built on that lead in the sixth. Guerra led off with a double, and Tom Pinnell and Mike Beal both reached on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively. Ramee Yacoub then drew a walk to make it 3-1, and Moore flew out to center for a sacrifice-fly RBI to make it 4-1 Billikens through five and a half.

But Richmond would score six runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth off SLU starter Zach Outman to take control at 7-4.

The Billikens plated another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Guerra to pull within two, but that is all the runs SLU would manage.

Outman was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits in 5-1/3 innings. Bard picked up the win for Richmond after five innings of work. Bennett had two hits for SLU.

The Billikens will break for finals and not be in action again until Friday, May 9, when they start a three-game series at Duquesne.
