ST. LOUIS - The eighth-ranked Saint Louis men's soccer team used two second half goals to post a 2-0 victory over Memphis Saturday night in an exhibition contest at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the SLU campus. Scott Wisniewski scored the game-winner, while Jimmy Holmes tallied in the waning seconds of the contest.
"We corrected some things that we saw in the first exhibition game, and the players came out and executed after we clarified their roles," Billiken assistant coach Matt Tutton said. "We corrected a lot of things defensively, and by doing so that allowed us to have a better offensive shape as well. We were able to run and play together better that way."
Wisniewski got the Billikens on the board at the 62:30 mark of the second half. Patterson struck a corner kick into the box that was headed back by Rob Viviano. Wisniewski was on the spot and pounded the ball just under the crossbar for the game's first tally.
Holmes scored on a break-away at the 89:59 mark to give the Billikens the eventual 2-0 victory.
Prior to Wisniewski's tally, the Billikens manufactured a flurry of runs that did not result in a score. In the first half, James Jaramillo sent a ball to Kyle Patterson that was corralled by charging Memphis keeper Michael Goodlett. Later, Brandon Barklage controlled a Josh Aranda cross and ripped a shot toward the goal, but Goodlett stood his ground to make a nice save.
Early in the second period, Eric Sweetin sent a ball up-field to Hamzagic who broke in all alone, but Goodlett was there to stop Hamzagic's shot from point-blank range.
Overall, Saint Louis out-shot the Tigers 22-4 and held a 7-1 advantage in penalty kicks. Starting keeper Pat Disbennett made two saves in the first half, and second-half keeper Ross Kaufman was not tested.
The Billikens open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 29, against San Diego in a tournament at Loyola Marymount University. SLU faces the host Lions on Sunday, Aug. 31.
