LOS ANGELES - Freshman Brent Hellesen scored late in regulation to help the sixth-ranked Billikens salvage a 1-1 tie against San Diego in the LMU Men's Soccer Fall Classic Friday at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.

Hellesen, who is from nearby Orange, Calif., netted his first-career goal in the 85th minute off an assist from UCLA transfer James Jaramillo. Down 1-0 with time running out, Jaramillo ripped a shot toward the goal that was deflected by a San Diego defender. Hellesen was in good position to collect the loose ball, and he pounded it into the near-side netting for the equalizer.

"Looking at the positives, we were very fortunate to come away with a tie against a tough team on the road," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "You have to give San Diego credit because they are a tough team, but we didn't play to our potential today and the guys know it. However, they understand the problem and are eager to correct it on Sunday when we face another viable opponent in Loyola Marymount."

The Toreros opened the scoring on Andrew Feld's tally in the 32nd minute when he capitalized on a broken SLU throw-in. He pounced on the failed clearance and snuck the ball past SLU starting keeper Pat Disbennett from point-blank range.

Neither team managed a shot on goal in the two overtime sessions.

Overall, San Diego out-shot the Billikens 10-6, while SLU had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Disbennett and his San Diego counterpart both had three saves. Hellesen was a late addition to the starting lineup, replacing Calum Angus just before kickoff due to a lingering leg injury. Angus' injury is not considered serious.

Saint Louis returns to action Sunday when it faces host Loyola Marymount in a 4 p.m. (CT) tilt. The Lions face New Mexico at Sullivan Field later tonight.
