ST. LOUIS -
Saint Louis held the high-powered Charlotte offense in check Friday night and earned a scoreless tie against the 24th-ranked 49ers in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens (7-8-4, 4-4-3 A-10), who have concluded the regular season, now must wait until Sunday to find out if they will qualify for the six-team A-10 Championship scheduled for Nov. 5-8 in Charlotte. Saint Louis is in fifth place with 15 points, and numerous scenarios are possible in the final two days of the campaign.
The tie may have cost Charlotte (15-2-2, 9-0-2) a chance to win its fourth consecutive A-10 regular-season crown. The 49ers entered the game tied with Dayton for first place.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) made a point-blank save of Sam Huecker's shot with less than five seconds remaining in the second overtime to preserve the deadlock. Perry and Charlotte's Lauren Brown made seven saves apiece, with three of Perry's stops coming in the overtime periods.
Saint Louis registered a 20-15 advantage in total shots, including a 10-3 margin in a first half the Billikens dominated. Senior Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) led all players with a career-high six shots, including a pair on goal, while senior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) tallied a game-high three shots on frame.
