The Saint Louis field hockey squad traveled to Richmond, Va., and dropped the Atlantic 10 Conference opener to the Spiders on Friday afternoon. Richmond's Sarah Blythe-Wood set a school record with five goals to pace the Spiders' attack.
Hanna Hess scored in the first minute of the game, and Adrian Pickar tallied four minutes later as the Spiders mustered all the offense they would need. Blythe-Wood notched her first goal of the afternoon as the Spiders took an 8-0 lead at intermission. Billiken sophomore Lauren Noe generated the best scoring chance for SLU in the first half, but her shot in the 10th minute was blocked. Early in the second half, Noe had another good scoring chance, but UR goalie Anne Jefferis made the save to preserve the shutout. The Spiders pulled away and closed out the scoring with four goals in the second half.
The Billikens are now 1-11 overall, 0-1 in the A-10. The Spiders even their record at 6-6, 1-0 in conference. SLU takes on Davidson Saturday at noon (CT) in a match played at the University of Richmond.
