Fenton, Mo. -
Emily West scored three minutes into overtime to boost Bellarmine past Saint Louis 4-3 in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The Billikens tied their season high with three goals.
West scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 25th minute to give the visiting Knights a 1-0 lead. Bellarmine was set to take a one-goal lead into the break, but SLU scored with just four seconds left before halftime. Senior Molly Boyne equalized for the Billikens as she collected a save from Bellarmine keeper Katie Lange and slid the ball into the left side of the cage at the 34:56 mark.
In the second half, the Billikens surged to a 2-1 lead when Lauren Noe tracked down a long pass down the left side, collected the ball and rifled a shot from a sharp angle into the BU goal. The Knights answered just over two minutes later as Natalie Perry scored, and Bellarmine took a 3-2 lead when Ellen West tallied on a rebound. As the minutes were winding down, SLU answered in the 67th minute. The Billikens earned a penalty corner, and Alex Weber converted on the ensuing shot to forge a 3-3 tie.
In the extra session, the Billikens had the first good scoring chance, but a long shot by Nicole Kent was turned aside. As play returned the other way, Lauren Schmeing sent a pass down the middle of the field to start the game-winning sequence. Emily West collected the ball on the left side of the SLU defense, made one move to the middle and shot the ball into the Billiken cage for the game winner.
The Billikens had 14 shots, including 11 on goal, but the Bellarmine defense finished with eight saves on the day. The Billikens fall to 1-7, while the Knights improve to 7-5. The Billikens return to the field Thursday, Oct. 1, when they host Missouri State in a 1 p.m. contest at the A-B Center.
