Springfield, Mo. -
Despite 13 saves from goalie Alex LaBarge, the Saint Louis field hockey team's bid to win a second straight contest fell short 7-0 at Missouri State on Monday. The Billikens were coming off their first victory of the season, a 3-0 win over Robert Morris on Sunday.
"We had a strong second half effort, and I liked the effort we put out after halftime," Billiken head coach Alex LaBarge had an unbelievable game and stood on her head to keep us in it. Alex Weber had a good effort and generated a lot of excellent scoring chances for us. The forwards as a group played well and earned corners to give us scoring opportunities."
Missouri State struck in the second minute and did not relinquish the lead to the Billikens. After the initial MSU tally, the Billikens picked up their offensive attack but could not find the back of the cage. The Bears, who launched 20 shots in the half at the SLU goal, tacked on three strikes prior to halftime.
The Billiken offense kept up the pressure and tallied seven shots in the second half, including earning eight penalty corners. However, MSU goalie Steph Anderson kept the Billikens off the scoreboard.
The Billikens see their record slip to 1-3, while the Bears move to 2-3 on the year. SLU hosts the first home game of the season on Sunday, Sept. 13, when nationally ranked Louisville comes to the A-B Center.
