ST. LOUIS -
Freshman Jenny Hummert (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's) scored her second career goal and sophomore Katie Walsh (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield) made four saves as Saint Louis shaded St. Bonaventure 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer action at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Hummert took a pass from junior Colleen Kustura (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View), who tallied her first assist as a Billiken, and rifled a straight-on shot from just inside the 18. The goal, Hummert's second in as many games, came at the 78:23 mark.
Kustura almost gave the Billikens (2-7-5, 1-3 A-10) the lead in the 40th minute. On a restart from the left side, she launched a perfectly flighted ball that was headed for the middle of the net, but St. Bonaventure keeper Nicole Markert made a leaping punch-save. The shot, the only one on frame in the first half for either team, was part of the Bills' 7-3 first-half advantage.
Walsh, who collected her seventh shutout of the season, made her first save 1:36 into the second half. She also made stops in the 59th, 65th, and 86th minutes.
Just moments before Hummert's game-winner, senior Christina Brown (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) directed a pair of shots on goal that Markert stopped for two of her four saves. Freshman Jessie Jarrett (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) also recorded a shot on net in the second half. Sophomore Alli Reimer (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) and St. Bonaventure's Anna Cunningham led all players with three total shots apiece. SLU out-shot St. Bonaventure (7-6, 1-2 A-10) 15-9 for the game.
The Billikens continue their four-game home stand Friday, Oct. 15, with a 7 p.m. A-10 match against Richmond at Hermann Stadium.
