La Salle used two goals in just over 10 minutes to slip by Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action Friday afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Center.
The Billikens earned two early penalty corners to have the best early scoring chances. Kelsey Shultz had two strong shots but La Salle's defense withstood the early SLU flurry. The Explorers answered with a penalty corner and Haley Jennings, who pushed out on the sequence, deflected the ball into the Billiken cage for an early 1-0 lead at the 5:58 mark. In the 11th minute, Gabrielle Holt collected a pass and skipped in a low shot for a 2-0 margin. Tori Lycett had a scoring chance midway through the period, but the La Salle defense kept the Billikens off the scoreboard. The Explorers added two more scores before intermission and took a 4-0 lead after the first period.
In the second half, Natalie Gamez put a shot towards the La Salle cage but just missed wide. The Explorers nearly added to their advantage, but defender Natalie Gamez shot in the 61st minute nearly tallied the first SLU goal but her blast was blocked by the La Salle defense.
The Billikens close out the regular season Sunday when they host West Chester on Senior Day. Before the 2 p.m. contest, the team will honor seniors Kelsey Shultz and Kelsey Traynor.
