Siena Edges Billikens 1-0 in Field Hockey

Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena scored the only goal of the game in the 58th minute and held off a late Saint Louis barrage for a 1-0 win in field hockey play Friday afternoon in Loudonville, N.Y.

It contest was a defensive battle as the teams combined for only seven shots. Siena had the first two shots in the period, and the Saints nearly went ahead in the waning moments of the first half. SLU keeper Alex LaBarge turned aside a shot by Lisa Heimerle to keep the game scoreless. Siena had a penalty corner to end the half, but the Billiken defense would not allow the go-ahead goal.

Chelsea Hower put a blast right on cage but Siena goalie Beth Meyers came up with the save. However, at the 57:59 mark, the Saints converted on a penalty corner as Heimerle converted to put Siena up 1-0. Megan Rogers came up with a defensive save to prevent the Saints from going up 2-0. The Billikens had a late corner but were unable to notch the game-tying goal.

The Billikens (0-13) open Atlantic 10 Conference play Saturday at Massachusetts. The Saints take their second win of the season and are now 2-9.
