Billikens Tripped up at Massachusetts

Oct. 9, 2010

Final Stats

Massachusetts scored three first-half goals and held off Saint Louis 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both field hockey squads. The contest was played in Amherst, Mass.

UMass earned a penalty corner in the opening minute, but SLU keeper Alex LaBarge made the save to deny the Minutewomen. On its next possession, UMass' Alexa Sikalis converted her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. Katie Kelly added her seventh goal of the season in the 14th minute, and Makaela Potts scored before halftime as UMass took a 3-0 lead.

The Billikens pushed forward in the second half but were unable to generate a good scoring chance. UMass continued to try and stretch the advantage, but LaBarge made five saves in the second half to keep the Billikens within striking distance. Potts added an insurance goal late in the second half as the Minutewomen eased the rest of the way to the win.

The Billikens remain winless on the season and look for their first win when they host Richmond Friday, Oct. 15, in a 1 p.m. game at the Anheuser-Busch Center.
