Freshman Megan Rogers scored her first goal for Saint Louis, but Missouri State rallied for a 5-1 field hockey win Wednesday in Springfield, Mo.
The Billikens survived five early penalty corners by the Bears as SLU goalie Alex LaBarge kept MSU off the scoreboard. The Billikens took control of the contest and forced a penalty corner midway through the first half. SLU had two shots turned aside, but their next shot found the back of the cage. Rogers collected a pass from senior Kelsey Shultz and fired a shot into the MSU goal for a 1-0 Billiken lead at the 17:01 mark. Missouri State answered with the game-tying goal just over two minutes later as Hillary Lawless recorded her fourth goal of the season. LaBarge denied MSU with three more saves as the game remained tied at halftime.
Missouri State took the lead in the 37th minute of play on the first shot of the second half. The Bears tried to stretch their lead but LaBarge turned aside three more shots to keep the Billikens close. Missouri State scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart to extend its lead. The Billikens earned three penalty corners in the second half but was unable to cut the gap.
The Billikens are now 0-11, and the Bears move to 3-6. SLU travels to take on No. 10 Louisville Sunday, Oct. 3, at noon (CT).
