Box Score ST. LOUIS - Andrea Beaty and Alyssa Deno tallied a match-high 10
kills apiece, and Saint Louis registered a season-high hitting percentage in a
25-16, 25-16, 25-15 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Temple Friday night at
Chaifetz Pavilion.
Beaty notched 10
kills and committed just one error on 22 swings for a .409 hitting mark. Four
other Billikens collected between four and six kills, and all hit at least .500
- Carly Marcum (6-1-8, .625), Carly Schumacher (5-0-10, .500), Aleksandra
Niemiec (4-0-5, .800) and Cassie Clarke (4-0-8, .500).
Clarke dished
out 31 assists, and Saint Louis hit .351 (41-8-94) collectively, its highest
mark of the season. The Billikens' 41 kills are a season high for a three-set
match.
The defensive
effort was strong and balanced as well, as the Billikens (9-8, 5-2 A-10) held
Temple (6-13, 2-4 A-10) to a .070 attack percentage. Grace Bonoma turned
in nine digs, followed by Clarke and Ashley Gaillot with eight apiece,
Deno with seven and Andrea Bolt with five. SLU outblocked Temple 9-2,
led by Marcum (five), Schumacher (four), Emma Goldschmidt (four) and
Clarke (three).
Gaillot served
three of the Billikens' six aces.
Leading 14-13 in
set one, SLU took command with a 5-0 run. Temple scored two straight points to
make it 19-15, but the Billikens tallied six of the final seven points to take
a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set two was
never in doubt. The Bills sprinted to a 10-2 lead and expanded the cushion to
18-6 before cruising to the win.
Set three was
tight early, with Saint Louis holding a 7-5 advantage. But the Billikens
gradually started to pull away, and a 6-0 spurt put the lead at 19-9. The Owls
drew no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Collin Wallace
and Gabriella Matautia led the Temple offensive attack with eight kills apiece,
and Elyse Burkert added seven kills. Chelsea Tupuola had a match-high 14 digs,
while Wallace added 10 digs.
The Billikens return to action Sunday, Oct. 16, hosting A-10 foe La Salle
at 1 p.m.
