CHICAGO - Courtney Webb scored 20 points for Saint Louis, but
Illinois-Chicago claimed a 68-60 victory over the Billikens Friday night at UIC
Pavilion.
Janisha Gearlds scored 11 points, tying her season high, while Mallory
Eggert collected eight rebounds, including five of SLU's 21 on the offensive
glass. Gearlds and Jacy Bradley had a game-high five assists apiece,
with Gearlds' total a season high. Halee Castleman grabbed a season-high
five rebounds.
Saint Louis
tallied a season-high 14 assists while committing a season-low 13 turnovers.
The Bills also continued their fine free-throw shooting, connecting on 75
percent (12-of-16) from the stripe.
UIC's Jasmine
Bailey led all scorers with 30 points, including a 16-of-19 effort from the
foul line, and added 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.
Kiara Strickland scored 16 points, and Katie Hannemann added 13 points and 10
rebounds.
UIC (3-0) began
to take command early in the second half, assembling a 10-4 run to take a 38-32
lead. Bailey scored eight points during the run.
The Billikens
(1-3) started to chip away, however, and cut the UIC lead to 40-38 on two Castleman
free throws, a Kim Bee free throw and Eggert's three-point play.
A 9-1 UIC
outburst put the Flames on top 49-39, but the Billikens suddenly caught fire. Gearlds
made a fast-break layup, and Bradley buried a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched
around two Webb free throws to knot the score at 49.
UIC scored on
its next possession to take the lead for good, then added a free throw for a
52-49 edge. Webb gathered an offensive rebound and scored to make it a
one-point game, but UIC notched six straight points to regain command en route
to the victory.
After Taylor
Foulks' 3-pointer gave UIC a 9-8 lead, Saint Louis went on a 14-4 flurry. Gearlds
ignited the run by driving the baseline for a layup, Bradley followed with a
jumper in the lane and Webb hit a 3-pointer in transition to make it 15-9 SLU.
After the teams
traded baskets, Webb nailed another trey from the left wing, and Desirae
Ball turned a Billiken offensive rebound into a jumper that made it 22-13.
UIC responded
with an 11-0 spurt to grab a 24-22 edge. The Flames led 26-24 and 28-26 before Castleman
collected an offensive rebound and converted to knot the score at 28 heading
into the break.
