MADISON,
Wis. - Lorreal Jones posted a second
consecutive double-double that included a game- and career-high 16 rebounds, and
Saint Louis dominated a taller Wisconsin team on the boards before the Badgers
escaped the Kohl Center with a 48-46 victory Monday night.
Jones scored 13 points and tied her career high of
three steals. She grabbed a game-high six offensive boards as Saint Louis (2-6)
earned a 21-6 advantage in that category, part of the Billikens' 45-33 overall
rebounding edge. SLU has outrebounded all eight opponents this season.
Jones, who leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in
rebounding and offensive rebounding, registered a double-digit rebound total
for a seventh time in eight games this season. She has three double-doubles
this season and eight in her career.
Mallory
Eggert netted a
season-high 10 points and collected seven rebounds (four offensive), and Kim
Bee equaled her season best with eight rebounds. Desirae Ball scored
eight points, while Janisha Gearlds tallied a game-high five assists and
tied her season rebounding high of five. Gearlds moved past Julie Goessling
into sixth place on SLU's career assists chart. Jacy Bradley chipped in
four assists.
The Billikens committed a season-low 11 turnovers.
"We don't believe in moral victories, so it's tough
to lose this one," head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said. "We prepared to win
and came in expecting to win. It's disappointing, but I'm extremely proud of
our effort. The only way I could possibly be any prouder of our players is if we had won
the game."
Taylor Wurtz scored a game-high 16 points, including
11 in the second half, and gathered nine rebounds for Wisconsin (4-5). Wurtz
was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Ashley Thomas had 14 points and seven rebounds.
After Saint Louis expanded a 22-17 halftime lead to
26-19 on baskets by Jones and Ball, Wisconsin used a 24-10 run to take a 43-36
lead. However, the Billikens refused to fold and scored on five of their next
six possessions to slice the margin to two points.
Eggert's layup was followed by a Courtney Webb
left-side baseline jumper. Wurtz hit a trey to push the UW lead back to six,
Eggert responded with two free throws, and Cassie Rochel scored what proved to
be Wisconsin's final points for a 48-42 advantage at the 2:42 mark.
Gearlds drove the lane for a layup, and, after a
Wisconsin miss, Jones took advantage of a SLU offensive rebound and nailed a
jumper from the right wing to close the gap to 48-46 with 1:11 remaining.
Saint Louis forced a turnover but missed the front
end of a 1-and-1 on its next possession with 31 seconds left. The Billikens had
to commit three consecutive fouls to force Wisconsin to go to the line, and it
paid off when Rochel missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 21 seconds to play.
Jones secured the rebound, but the Bills had to settle for an off-balance
3-point attempt that went wide.
Wurtz rebounded, was fouled and missed a free throw
with 3.2 seconds left. Rochel rebounded, however, and Wisconsin ran out the clock.
The Billikens grabbed their first lead of the night
when Jones registered a three-point play for a 10-8 SLU advantage. Wisconsin
used a 7-2 run to take a 15-12 lead, but the Bills answered with a 10-2 spurt
to close the half.
Ball sparked the flurry with a short baseline
jumper, and Jones put Saint Louis on top with another three-point play. Bee
sank a free throw, Gearlds grabbed an offensive rebound and converted, and Bradley
hit a jumper just inside the top of the 3-point arc to make it 22-17 Billikens
at the break.
The Billikens travel
to Boca Raton, Fla., to face Florida Atlantic Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip time is 2
p.m. (CT).
