CINCINNATI - Mallory Eggert led four Saint Louis double-digit scorers with 14 points in the
Billikens' 67-57 Atlantic 10 Conference loss to Xavier Wednesday night at
Cintas Center.
Eggert, who scored 11 points in the second half, was 6-of-11 from the
field. She also led the Billikens (7-15, 1-6 A-10) with seven rebounds.
Desirae Ball and Courtney
Webb netted 11 points apiece, while Janisha Gearlds (5-of-10 FG) tossed in 10 points and tied for game-high honors with four
assists. Lorreal
Jones collected six rebounds.
Tyeasha Moss scored a game-high 24 points and Jessica Pachko added 21 for
Xavier (5-15, 2-5 A-10). Amber Gray pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Saint Louis edged Xavier 35-34 on the boards and committed just 11
turnovers, tying its season low. However, the Musketeers outscored the
Billikens 16-4 from the free-throw line, hitting 16-of-20 from the stripe to
SLU's 4-of-11.
The Billikens trailed by 18 points at intermission and by 19 early in the
second half but made two runs to give themselves a chance.
Gearlds scored six points in a 12-5 spurt that narrowed the Xavier lead
to 46-34 with 13:35 remaining. The Musketeers tallied the next six points to
re-establish an 18-point bulge, 52-34, but the Billikens had one more challenge
to give.
Webb's drive to the basket sparked an 8-0 Saint Louis run. Ball hit a
one-handed baseline runner, Webb sank a 17-foot jumper, and Eggert grabbed an
offensive rebound and scored to make it 52-42 Xavier with 8:00 to play.
Following three straight empty possessions, Saint Louis scored on five of its
next six touches to slice the Xavier lead to single digits. Eggert banked in a
shot, Ball hit a baseline jumper, and Eggert turned an offensive board into a
layup. Eggert nailed a 10-foot turnaround, and Ball's three-point play made it
62-53 Xavier at the 1:42 mark.
Unfortunately, the Billikens could not take advantage of an opportunity
to draw closer following a Xavier miss, and the Musketeers went 5-of-6 from the
foul line in the final 55 seconds to secure the victory.
After Xavier took a quick 4-0 lead, Saint Louis got baskets from Gearlds,
Eggert and Jones to forge a 6-6 tie. A 7-2 Xavier spurt gave the Musketeers a
13-8 advantage, but a long jumper by Webb and Gearlds' layup pulled the
Billikens to within three at 15-12.
However, the Musketeers took command with a 12-0 run for a 27-12 lead.
Later, Xavier scored on its last three possessions of the half to take a 39-21
cushion to the locker room.
