ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored a pair of unanswered
goals to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 contest, but was unable to notch the
equalizer and fell 3-2 Saturday to Memphis in a men's soccer exhibition game at Robert R.
Hermann Stadium.
After Memphis scored the first three goals of the game, the
Billikens were in control for much of the second half and got goals from Khalil
Karl and Alex Sweetin to make it exciting at the end.
"The end result is disappointing, but if you look at with
the glass half full, nobody gave up on each other and the guys worked hard and
created a number of really good looks in the second half," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "The difficult thing
to take in is that you just cannot give up three goals to anybody. I would have
liked to have had a better start than we did. They had three shots and they scored
on each of them. I don't think that will happen like that every week, but we
have to start sharper."
Chandler Gagnon, Mark Sherrod and Benjamin Ciosanski all
tallied to give Memphis a 3-0 advantage. The Billikens got on the board at the
37:24 mark when Karl buried a Raymond Lee pass. Sweetin made it 3-2 in the 70th
minute when he finished a Jon Roeckle pass.
The Billikens out-shot Memphis 11-6 and owned a 5-2
advantage in corner kicks.
It was the final of three exhibition games for the Bills.
Next week, SLU officially opens the 2012 campaign against No. 12 Indiana on
Friday, Aug. 24. Game time at Hermann Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
"All three
games this exhibition season put us in different situations and gave us
different tests," McGinty said. "All in all, I feel like we have a really good
group heading into the IU match."
