Box Score ST. LOUIS - George Washington overcame a 2-0 deficit and defeated
Saint Louis 13-25, 15-25, 28-26, 25-20, 15-12 Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic
10 Conference match at Chaifetz Pavilion.
Saint Louis
slipped to 5-12 overall and 0-4 in the A-10. George Washington upped its
records to 5-13, 2-2.
Carly Marcum and Lauren Baumet provided a strong 1-2
offensive punch with 13 kills apiece for the Billikens. Marcum turned in a
match-high .406 attack percentage (13-0-32), while Baumet hit .344 (13-2-32). Cassie
Clarke had 32
assists and six kills (6-1-14, .357).
Grace Bonoma tied for match-high honors
with 23 digs, followed by Anna Church (15), Andrea Bolt (13) and Megan Gilbert (11). Marcum helped lead SLU
to a 10-7 blocking advantage with a match-high-tying six rejections, while Carly
Schumacher
and Gilbert collected five and four blocks, respectively. Church and Bolt had a
match-high three service aces apiece as the Billikens registered a season-high
12 aces.
The Billikens
seized early control of the deciding set and led 7-3. But a 7-1 run gave George
Washington a 10-8 advantage, and the Colonials maintained the lead to complete
their stunning comeback.
A 1-0 lead in
each of the first two sets was the only advantage George Washington would hold
in either frame. Saint Louis gradually pulled away and posted decisive
victories in both stanzas thanks in large part to its defense. The Bills
limited GW to a total of nine kills and a -.095 attack percentage in taking a
2-0 cushion to the locker room for the break between sets two and three.
The Colonials
grabbed a 9-3 lead in set three, but the Billikens stormed back to go on top
23-22. George Washington reclaimed the lead at 24-23, the first of four match
points, and finally eked out a 28-26 win to stay alive.
Set four saw GW
lead 11-7 before a 6-1 spurt put Saint Louis in front 13-12. The Colonials
quickly regained the upper hand, however, and the Bills could not manage to tie
or take the lead again.
The
Billikens step out of conference play Tuesday, Oct. 2, when they host Western
Illinois at 7 p.m.
