MEMPHIS – No. 10 Saint Louis defeated the Memphis Tigers 3-1 Saturday night in the Billikens' exhibition opener. Sophomore Tyler David, junior Kingsley Bryce and junior Raymond Lee scored for the Bills.
Saint Louis scored twice in the first half and carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime. David got things started when he scored after a Billiken corner kick in the 30th minute. The ball pinged around the box, and David buried a rebound past the Memphis keeper for the game's first goal.
Bryce doubled the Billiken advantage with the eventual game-winner with just 10 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. He tracked the ball into the Memphis penalty area, and after a misplay by the Tigers keeper, Bryce buried a shot into the far-side netting from a tough angle on the end line to make it 2-0.
Lee completed the scoring for the Billikens when he scored on a breakaway in the 87th minute. A few minutes later as the time ticked away, Memphis got on the board when Chandler Gagnon put home a PK with just 13 seconds remaining in the match.
SLU resumes exhibition play Saturday, Aug. 24, when it hosts No. 8 Akron at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Billikens' regular-season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium.
