Box Score ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis baseball defeated Southern Mississippi 2-1 in Pensacola, Fla. for the Billikens' third consecutive win. Redshirt senior Clay Smith (1-0) gets the win after going seven innings with six hits, one earned run, three walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore southpaw Brett Shimanovsky gets the save, his first of the year. Saint Louis rises to 3-3 on the year.
The Golden Eagles scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Saint Louis responded in the top of the fourth when Trent Leimkuehler scored on a throwing error from Southern Miss.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the eighth inning. Freshman shortstop Alex King reached on a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Danny Murphy. Mike Vigliarolo drove him in on a single to left field, giving SLU the lead.
Shimanovsky entered in the bottom of the eighth with two away and retired all four batters he saw.
The win was the 17th of Smith's career, moving him to fifth all-time at Saint Louis. Alex Alemann holds the career record with 27 wins.
Leimkuehler, Vigliarolo and Braxton Martinez each recorded two hits in the contest.
Next up for the Billikens is North Florida on Feb. 22. Freshman RHP Connor Lehmann is set to get the start for SLU against the Ospreys.
