THE BASICS
--Sadie Stipanovich scored a game-high 20 points, but George Washington held on to sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with an 89-80 victory over Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
--The Billikens, who saw their winning streak halted at seven, fell to 17-5 overall and 7-2 in the A-10. George Washington improved to 19-3, 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
--Following a back-and-forth first few minutes, Saint Louis took an 11-9 lead on a Maddison Gits basket.
--George Washington finished the first quarter with a 15-4 run and led 24-15 after the opening 10 minutes.
--The Colonials led by 10 points on three occasions in the second quarter, the final time a 35-25 advantage.
--The Billikens finished the quarter with an 11-4 flurry, scoring on six of their last eight possessions to narrow the GW lead to 39-36 at halftime.
--After Saint Louis grabbed a 42-41 edge early in the third quarter, GW used a 14-6 spurt to go on top 55-48.
--The Billikens answered with an 8-2 run to slice the margin to one, 57-56. GW took a 61-56 lead to the fourth quarter.
--Aaliyah Covington's trey on SLU's first possession of the final period made it 61-59.
--George Washington stretched the lead to 71-61, but 3-pointers by Olivia Jakubicek, Jackie Kemph and Covington made it a one-possession game, 73-70.
--That was as close as the Billikens would get, however, as GW's Brianna Cummings scored on four straight possessions to extend the Colonials' lead to 81-70.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
--Sadie Stipanovich, who now has scored 20 or more points 10 times in her career, added seven rebounds.
--Aaliyah Covington (5-of-7 FG, 3-of-5 3-pointers) scored 15 points.
--Jackie Kemph (5-of-8 FG) tallied 14 points and eight assists.
--Jamesia Price contributed nine points, a season-high and team-high eight rebounds and a season-high-tying seven assists with just one turnover. Price moved into third place on SLU's career assists list (381).
--The Billikens shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the field.
--Saint Louis was 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half.
