THE BASICS
--Saint Louis concluded the regular season with authority on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, defeating Rhode Island 77-60 in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup at Chaifetz Arena.
--The victory was the fifth in a row for the Billikens (23-6, 13-3 A-10), who added to their school records for total wins and conference wins. SLU's .813 conference winning percentage also is a school record.
--The Billikens are assured of no worse than a second-place tie with George Washington in the final A-10 standings, and they have a chance to earn a share of the regular-season crown. League leader Duquesne (13-2) plays its A-10 finale Sunday at St. Bonaventure.
--The Bills have earned a double bye to the A-10 Championship quarterfinals and will play their tournament opener next Friday. The conference office will announce tournament seedings, pairings and start times Sunday evening.
--Rhode Island fell to 11-17, 5-11 with its seventh consecutive loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
--Saint Louis wasted no time taking command, scoring the first 10 points of the game just four minutes in.
--Rhode Island whittled away and sliced the Billikens' lead to 18-14 with 46 seconds left in the first quarter. But a three-point play by Jackie Kemph and a Denisha Womack 3-pointer restored a 10-point margin, 24-14, at the end of one.
--Jenny Vliet immediately buried a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, giving SLU its largest first-half advantage.
--Rhode Island dented the lead with a 10-4 run to make it a 31-24 game at the 5:57 mark. Saint Louis answered with a Sadie Stipanovich layup and a Vliet triple to go on top 36-24.
--The margin floated between eight and 12 points the rest of the quarter before the Billikens carried a 46-35 lead to the locker room.
--Neither team generated much offense in the third quarter. A Stipanovich jumper stretched the Saint Louis lead to 56-42 before a pair of Rhode Island treys allowed the Rams to make it an eight-point game. Jordyn Frantz hit a short jumper to give the Billikens a 58-48 lead after three.
--The Rams hung around for a while in the fourth quarter, trailing 60-52 with 7:11 remaining. But Vliet's third 3-pointer of the game triggered a 10-0 spurt that put the game out of reach.
