THE BASICS

Kaylea Chappelle fired a six-hitter and Alex Nickel collected three hits as Saint Louis defeated Indiana State 4-1 to earn a doubleheader split Tuesday at the Billiken Sports Center.

•Indiana State won the opener 5-2.

•The Billikens are now 22-23. Indiana State is 22-28.

GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED

•Nickel gave Saint Louis a quick edge by leading off the first inning with her 29th career home run, tying Lindsay Friedman's Billiken career record. It was her sixth homer of the season.

•The 1-0 advantage held up until the fourth, when Indiana State scored three runs.

•The Sycamores added two tallies in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

Mackenzie Peter slammed her team-high-tying eighth home run to begin the seventh.

•A Hailey Weavers single and an Indiana State error with two outs brought the tying run to the plate, but the rally ended there.

GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES

•Weavers had two hits.

Maddie Baalman allowed just one earned run.

Mackenzie Lawson collected a double.

Josie Knesel registered a single.

GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED

•Saint Louis grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on Knesel's sacrifice fly.

•Indiana State pulled even in the fourth.

•The Billikens plated three runs in their half of the fourth, all with two outs. Emma Buckles delivered a two-run single, and Lawson drew a bases-loaded walk.

GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES

•In picking up her sixth win of the season, Chappelle struck out four and walked only two.

•Nickel notched a double and two singles.

•Peter and Weavers smacked a double apiece.

UP NEXT

•The Billikens travel to Olean, New York, for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series vs. St. Bonaventure that ends the regular season. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
