TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Saint Louis University baseball got its first win of the season with a 17-5 victory at Indiana State this afternoon. The Billiken offense which had been lagging, exploded with 15 hits and runs in every inning but the third and the ninth. Senior Brian Haddock went 2-for-6 at the plate, driving in five runs. Junior lefthander Dan Shouse got the start and the victory to go to 1-1 on the season.
The Billikens (1-5) struck early and often, putting the first run on the board after Haddock tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Jim Bredenkoetter. Saint Louis added a pair in the second inning and three in the fourth, on Haddock's home run to right center.
In a seven-run fifth inning, Bredenkoetter led off with a walk and senior Adam Shea followed before junior John McLaughlin drilled a triple to clear the bases. McLaughlin scored on a fielder's choice which also put junior Brandon Shockley on first. Designated hitter Mike Orrico walked and shortstop Paul Miles singled to load the bases. Centerfielder Kurt Evans scored Shockley, but Miles was out at second for the first out of the inning. Haddock reached on an error and Orrico scored to put the Bills up 10-0. With Haddock thrown out at second, Evans was at third for junior Nick Steiner. Steiner's two-out double scored Evans before the Sycamores brought out their third pitcher of the inning. Bredenkoetter doubled to score Steiner and put the Bills up 13-0.
Shouse gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and shutout the Sycamores in the sixth before turning the lead over to junior Jason Schlautman. Schlautman closed the game, giving up two runs and striking out three in three innings.
The Billikens play their home opener Wed., Mar. 1 at 3 p.m. against Eastern Illinois before hosting Illinois-Chicago in a three-game set beginning Fri., Mar. 3 at 3 p.m.
