Softball Billikens Earn Split With Austin Peay

St. Louis - The Saint Louis University softball team split a doubleheader with Austin Peay on Wed., March 15, dropping the first game 3-2 but bouncing back in the second with a 7-0 shutout. The win in game two allowed the Billikens to surpass last season's win total.

In game one, the Bills registered one more hit than the Lady Govs, but were unable to push across the tying run. Austin Peay grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning with two singles, a double and a SLU error. APSU added what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Pinch hitter Leslee Green was hit by a Kristin Rossi pitch and then stole second. Christina Garza followed with an RBI single.

The Billikens came back and tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kristin Rossi struckout six batters in going the distance for SLU.

After holding a slim 1-0 lead, the Billikens erupted for their biggest inning of the season with six runs in the sixth to seal the 7-0 win in game two. Erin Jeffrey tripled to leadoff the fourth inning and scored on Bridget Fletcher began the rally with a single and Jeffrey did likewise. Beth Yagge reached on an error by APSU and Beth Puttcamp completed the scoring outburst with an RBI single. The Billikens sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth.

Riva was splendid for SLU and scattered five hits in posting her second career shutout. She only allowed one Austin Peay batter to reach third base. The shutout was the second this season by SLU, marking the first time since 1993 that the Billikens have recorded two shutouts in the same season.

The Billikens see their record improve to 5-14 on the season. Austin Peay is now 6-17 this year.
