Saint Louis University baseball recorded a season-high 21 hits in a 17-5 victory at Tennessee-Martin this afternoon to improve to 7-11 on the season. The Billikens posted four runs in three different innings and ended the game with a trio of runs in the ninth. Junior Nick Steiner recorded his eighth home run of the season, going 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBI. Six Billikens recorded two or more hits in the contest.
The Billikens put four runs on the board to open the game as Adam Shea drive in the first run on a fielder's choice. John McLaughlin and Jim Bredenkoetter also recorded RBI in the inning. Saint Louis starter Wes Jaillet gave up a lead off home run in the bottom of the second, his only run of the game.
The Billiken offense was again in full force in the top of the fourth as Brandon Shockley drove in Chad Wrinkle with one out. The next batter, Steiner, drove in the eventual winning run on a single to left field. McLaughlin plated the inning's remaining two runs with a double to right center.
Ben Hutton took over on the mound in the sixth with a comfortable 10-1 lead. Like Jaillet, he yielded a solo home run as his only run of the game. Shea hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh and the Billikens wrapped up the scoring with RBI from Shockley and Bredenkoetter in the top of the ninth.
The Billikens return home for a weekend Conference USA series against Memphis. The first pitch Fri., March 24 will be at 7 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday games slated for 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on WINU 880 AM.
