Saint Louis University baseball fell to 8-12 on the season, 2-3 in Conference USA with a 7-3 loss to Memphis this afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center. The Tigers scored early and took advantage of five Billiken errors to record their first C-USA win of the season. Saint Louis struggled at the plate as UM's starter Jason Wiedmeyer limited the Bills to just one hit through the first five innings.
Memphis got an early one-run lead on an RBI double from Daniel Uggla in the first inning, while Saint Louis went down in order through two innings. The Tigers added three runs in the top of the third, beginning with a solo home run from Stephen Frix. A pair of errors by Billiken rightfielder John McLaughlin (Glencoe, Mo./Eureka) extended the inning and allowed two more runs to score. Memphis scored again in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
Saint Louis finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Steiner's (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) sacrifice fly to center scored Eric Constable (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) who drew a leadoff walk.
The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth when relief pitcher Brad Wehrfritz(Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) issued a bases loaded walk to Jay Fik and Tyler Shelton's sacrifice fly score Daniel Uggla. Saint Louis threatened in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single from Jim Bredenkoetter (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) and Paul Miles (St. Louis, Mo./Jefferson College) reaching on an error. Contable's two-out single plated the a pair to cut into the Tiger lead, but Brandon Shockley (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) grounded out to end the rally.
Despite going eight innings, striking out seven and giving up just four earned runs, Billiken starter Dan Shouse (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) took the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season. Wiedmeyer got the win for the Tigers.
The Billikens and Tigers will square off for the final game of their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center. The game will be broadcast live on WINU 880 AM.
