The Saint Louis University softball team earned a split of a doubleheader at UMKC on Sunday afternoon. Kristin Rossi picked up her fourth victory of the season as the Billikens won the first game 2-1. UMKC came back to earn the split with a 6-0 decision in the second game.
In game one, the Billikens had to rally to post their sixth win of the season, already the most victories in a season since 1996. The Kangaroos grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Chrystal Vega led off with a single, moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored UMKC's only run on an error. Erin Jeffrey began SLU's comeback in the sixth when she reached on a fielder's choice. She stole second and scored when Beth Yagge laced a double to center field. The Billikens scored the game-winning run as Yagge reached home after an error on a grounder by Janet Venorsky. UMKC threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as they put two runners on, but Rossi induced a grounder by Debby DeNayer to end the threat. Rossi struckout six UMKC batters in going the distance for the win.
UMKC grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two and kept the Billiken offense in check with three hits to take game two. The Kangaroos used five hits to score the three runs in the first. UMKC added a single run in the fourth and tacked on two more runs in the fifth to earn the split.
The Billikens are 6-17 on the season while UMKC is now 10-11. Saint Louis returns home on Tue., March 28 to host Bradley in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
