The Saint Louis University softball team out-hit the SIU-Carbondale Salukis 12-6 in two games, but saw SIU slip away in a doubleheader in Carbondale, Ill. on Thursday afternoon. Jennifer Riva allowed just a single to the third batter of the game, but SIU took a 1-0 decision after the Billikens committed six errors. In game two, Kristin Rossi held SIU to just five hits, but the Salukis pushed across three runs in the third inning and held on for a 3-0 win.
The Billikens put at least one runner on in the first five innings but was held off the board each time. The only run SIU would score came in the fourth inning. Lori Greiner worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She moved to third on a SLU fielding error and eventually scored on the second SLU error of the inning. Jennifer Riva was sparkling on the mound and allowed just one single and one walk to the Salukis while striking out three. Erin Jeffrey and Beth Puttcamp both had two hits during the game.
As in game one, one inning was the difference in the outcome. SIU used three hits to score three runs and kept the Bills off the board late for a 3-0 victory. Erin Stremsterfer singled in the only run the Salukis needed and Netty Hallahan doubled in two runs with the bases loaded for the key hits in the inning. Rossi kept SIU's bats in check and struckout two for SLU.
The Billikens fall to 6-21 on the season while SIU-Carbondale, currently on a seven-game winning streak, improves to 25-9. Saint Louis plays its first-ever Conference USA game this Sat., April 1 at South Florida.
