FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. - Saint Louis University baseball fell to 3-8 after a 7-4 loss at Arkansas this afternoon. The Billikens got on the board first and mounted a furious rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, but came up just short. Five Saint Louis pitchers gave up 11 hits to the Razorbacks, while the Billiken offense was held to just six singles.
The Billikens were on the board early as lead off hits by Brian Haddock and Brandon Shockley led to Nick Steiner's RBI single through the right side. Shockley scored one batter later as Adam Shea hit into a double play that cleared the bases. The Razorbacks answered with three runs in the bottom of the first as Billiken starter Dan Shouse also gave up two lead off singles.
The Billikens went down in order in the next three innings and the Razorbacks managed just two base runners over the same span. Arkansas tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth inning before adding three more in the bottom of the sixth.
Trailing 7-2 in their final at-bat, the Billikens' Jim Bredenkoetter reached on an error to open the frame. A single and a hit batter later, the bases were loaded with no outs for shortstop Paul Miles. The first-year player struck out for the first out of the inning and the top of the order on deck. Haddock drew an RBI walk and Shockley drove in the inning's second run on a ground ball to first base. With two outs and two men on, the stage was set for Steiner to be the hero, but the junior could not deliver and grounded out to third.
Shouse (1-2) took the loss for Saint Louis while Arkansas' Jeremy Rankin (1-0) picked up the win.
The two teams square off again tomorrow afternoon, Mar. 8, at 4 p.m. before the Billikens travel to Murray, Ky., to take on the Murray State Racers on Friday and Saturday.
