April 11, 2000

Box Score

CHARLESTON, ILL. - Saint Louis University baseball scored a season-high 20 runs on as many hits in a 20-12 victory at Eastern Illinois this afternoon. The Billikens (13-19) recorded eight doubles and a pair of home runs in the offensive barrage. Junior Jim Bredenkoetter (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) went 4-for-6, including two doubles, and recorded a career-high six RBI.

The Billikens started early with four runs in the first behind four-straight RBI doubles by Bredenkoetter, Adam Shea (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet), Nick Steiner (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) and Mike Orrico (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights). The Panthers' starter Chad Williams was replaced with one out in the inning.

On the contrary, Billiken starter Jason Schlautman(Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet) allowed just one hit through the first three innings before yielding five runs on just two hits and three walks in the bottom of the fourth. The offense had the pitcher covered as the Billikens had added three runs in the top-half of the inning and answered the Panthers' charge with four runs in the top of the fifth.

Steiner led off the fifth with a solo home run to left, his ninth of the season. Junior Brandon Shockley (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) doubled in a run as did Eric Constable (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) to extend his hit streak to nine games. Senior Brian Haddock (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) drove in the inning's last run with a single to right.

Already leading 11-5, Saint Louis pushed seven runs across in the top of the seventh behind a bases loaded double from Bredenkoetter that plated all three runners. Orrico hit his fifth home run of the season to score two more.

Schlautman, who improved to 3-2 on the season, gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Brad Wehrfritz (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) came on in the eighth. The sophomore yielded four in the inning, but held the Panthers scoreless in the ninth after Saint Louis had added a pair in the top of the inning.

Saint Louis' 20 runs are the most scored by the Billikens since a 21-5 victory at Grambling State on March 16, 1996. The Billikens return to action on Wed., April 12 when they host Southeast Missouri State at The Billiken Sports Center.
