Baseball Rallies to 5-4 Win Over SEMO

April 12, 2000

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University baseball put together an eighth-inning rally to come from behind in their final at-bat to knock off Southeast Missouri State 5-4 tonight at The Billiken Sports Center. The hot-hitting Jim Bredenkoetter (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) drove in the game-winning run with a single down the leftfield line, and freshman reliever Dan Parker (Ballwin, Mo./SLUH) forced the Indians to leave the tying-run at third to second the victory.

Junior shortstop Paul Miles (St. Louis, Mo./Jefferson College) led off the pivotal eighth inning and was hit by the Indians' fourth pitcher of the evening, Tommy Thomas. Miles swiped second as Thomas recorded a strikeout for the inning's first out. Eric Constable (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) was robbed by SEMO's Jeremy Johnson on a fly ball to shallow right for out number two. Senior Brian Haddock (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) drew a two-out walk to brought up the .364-hitting Bredenkoetter who added to his team-high 36 RBI with the single.

The Indians got what they wanted in the top of the ninth as Clemente Bonilla recorded a lead-off single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Meyer, who already had a triple and a double in the game, hit one to deep centerfield. Fielded by Constable, the Billiken centerfielder hit Miles with the cutoff and nearly put Meyer out at third. Denver Stuckey grounded out for the second out to bring up Johnson, the Indians' leading hitter who had not reached base in the game. Parker got behind with a 2-1 count before Johnson made contact, lifting the ball to left field for the Billikens' Kurt Evans (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Bros.) to record the final out.

SEMO was on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Billikens answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. The Indians threatened in the fifth with Meyer's leadoff triple, but he was stranded after a fly ball, an outstanding play by Haddock at first and a strikeout. Saint Louis responded to the challenge with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Billikens improve to 14-19 on the season while the Indians fall to 20-10.

Saint Louis returns to Conference USA action this weekend with a three-game series at South Florida. The series begins Fri., April 14 at 6 p.m. (CT) with Saturday and Sunday games at noon.
