SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -
After seeing a 12-game hit streak end Tuesday night, senior Adam Shea bounced back with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance that helped Saint Louis topple Southwest Missouri State 8-2 Wednesday night in Springfield. Billiken starter Ben Hutton recorded six strikeouts in seven innings, giving up just two runs on nine hits.
The Billikens jumped on the Bears quickly, scoring three runs in the first two innings before a wild pitch put SMS on the board in the bottom of the third. Third baseman Joe Boyer gave Saint Louis some power at the plate as he jacked his second homer of the season in the top of the second.
Saint Louis added to their advantage with a four-run fifth. Chad Wrinkle scored on an error by the Bears' shortstop, leaving runners at first and third for Shea. The Billiken catcher doubled to right to drive in the first of his two runs on the night. The Bears issued Nick Steiner a free pass with the intentional walk to load the bases for John McLaughlin. The struggling Billiken hitter made them pay with patience as he earned an RBI walk. A new pitcher came on to face Paul Miles, but the shortstop got the same treatment as he recorded an RBI on one of his three walks in the game.
Shea drove in another run with an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Eric Constable. Hutton got the win for the Billikens, improving his record to 3-2, as Saint Louis moved to 16-21 on the season.
The Billikens face Conference USA foe Louisville in a three-game series this weekend. Action Fri., April 21 has been moved to 5 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader Sat., April 22 beginning at noon. All three games can be heard live on WINU 880 AM as Scott Warman will be on hand with the play-by-play.
