St. Louis -
The UMKC Kangaroos swept the Saint Louis Billikens in nonconference play Tuesday afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center. UMKC posted a 6-2 win in game one and followed with an 8-1 decision in the second game.
The Billikens took a 1-0 lead in the first game. Beth Puttcamp bunted her way on and reached second on Beth Yagge's single. SLU pulled off a double steal and Jennifer Messmer had an RBI groundout to score Puttcamp. But UMKC came back to tally four runs on three hits in the third to assume a 4-1 margin. The Bills earned one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Meredith Henry singled down the leftfield line to start things off for the Billikens. She advanced to second on a fielding error by UMKC and scored on another Kangaroo error to pull SLU to 4-2. However, UMKC added two runs in the seventh to seal the victory.
In game two, after grabbing an early 1-0 lead, UMKC again used a four-run inning and moved on for the win. The Kangaroos sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times on four hits with the aid of two SLU fielding errors to grab a 5-0 lead. Erin Jeffrey singled with the bases loaded to bring home Janet Venorsky. But the Billikens could get no closer and UMKC added three insurance runs in the seven. Included in those three runs was the first-ever home run hit at The Billiken Sports Center by UMKC catcher Amanda Rice.
The Billikens fall to 8-37 overall while UMKC improves to 21-24, 8-1. The Billikens travel to Birmingham for a three-game set this weekend at UAB.
