Box Score
ST. LOUIS -
The Saint Louis University baseball team had a handle on the nation's No. 9 team for much of the game, but could not generate enough offense to avoid the 4-0 loss at The Billiken Sports Center tonight. Saint Louis starter Dan Shouse (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) yielded four runs on seven hits while striking out five in eight innings.
Pitchers dominated the effort through the first two innings as neither team generated any scoring threat. In the top of the third, however, Shouse got into trouble allowing four-consecutive two-out hits that drove in a run and loaded the bases for Jason Pekar. The Billiken lefthander walked the Cougar centerfielder to put his team in an 0-2 hole.
Shouse regained control after the miscues allowing just two hits over the next four innings. A leadoff walk in the eighth brought more bad news when Houston's Kris Wilken put one over the rightfield fence to plate two more runs and give the Cougars a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Houston starter Kyle Crowell was overpowering on the mound, striking out eight Billikens in the nine-inning complete game victory. Saint Louis posted only four hits in the game, including three by centerfielder Brian Haddock (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH).
These two teams square off again Sat., April 29 at 1 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center. Former Billiken Rob Fisher will call the action live on WINU 880 AM.
