April 4, 2000

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Saint Louis University baseball stayed with Missouri at the plate, but could not generate runs at key times in a 16-8 loss in Columbia. Adam Shea and Mike Orrico each posted home runs in a six-run seventh inning rally, but the Tigers' 15-2 lead was too much to overcome.

The Billikens (11-16, 3-6 C-USA) struck early on Missouri starter Ralph McCasland, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Jim Bredenkoetter continued his hot hitting, driving in a run in the first with a two-out single to right field. John McLaughlin drove in Shea and loaded the bases for designated hitter Joe Boyer. The freshman popped up to right field to leave the runners stranded.

The Tigers answered the offensive call with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. McCasland settled in after the early barrage, allowing just four most hits over the next five innings. Meanwhile, his offense scored one in the third before hanging four runs on the Billikens in the fifth and sixth innings.

Saint Louis was back on the board in the seventh against reliever P.J. McGinnis. Eric Constable lead with a single and back-to-back errors allowed him to come around to score, while putting Brian Haddock on third and Nick Steiner on first. Shea stepped up with a three-run homer to cut into the lead. McLaughlin drew a one-out walk after Bredenkoetter struck out. Brandon Shockley grounded out for the second out which pushed McLaughlin to third for Orrico's two-run shot over the right field wall. Paul Miles singled to left center to keep bring Constable back to the plate, but the centerfield struck out to end the inning.

Freshman Jacob Baumgartner took over on the mound for the Billikens in the seventh and gave up a leadoff home run and a pair of singles, before sitting the Tigers down in order for the remainder of the game.

Saint Louis starter Jason Schlautman took the loss while the Tigers' McCasland earned the win.

The Billikens are back in action on Wed., April 5 at 3 p.m. when they host the Bradley Braves at The Billiken Sports Center.
