April 9, 2000

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University baseball made a run in the ninth, but the margin was too great as the Billikens (12-19, 3-8 C-USA) fell 13-9 at Tulane this afternoon. With a lead going into the sixth, Saint Louis gave up seven runs in the bottom of the inning as the Green Wave offense dominated Billiken starter Zach Placzek (Omaha, Neb./Creighton).

Down 3-1 after the first inning, Saint Louis took the lead in the top of the third. Leftfielder Brian Haddock (St. Louis, SLUH) drove in Eric Constable (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) with a one-out single that tied the game at three. The Green Wave brought in a new pitcher that struck out Jim Bredenkoetter (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) and intentionally walked Adam Shea (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet) to get to Nick Steiner (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central). The junior second baseman delivered with a two-out RBI single to right that plated Haddock and gave Saint Louis the 4-3 lead.

After giving up three runs on three hits in the first, Placzek settled down to hold the Green Wave to just two hits over the next four innings. In the bottom of the sixth, however, the freshman gave up three-straight one-out singles that allowed Tulane to tie the game at 4-4. Ben Hutton (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) came on in relief to finish the inning, but not before the Green Wave put seven more runs across the plate to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Tulane added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth on the Billikens fourth pitcher, Jacob Baumgartner (Auxvasse, Mo./North Callaway). Saint Louis scored five in the top of the ninth as Kurt Evans (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Bros.), Bredenkoetter and Shea recorded RBI.

The Billikens travel to Eastern Illinois on Tues., April 11 for a 1 p.m. game before returning to The Billiken Sports Center for a 3 p.m. game with Southeast Missouri State on Wed., April 12.
