Erin Jeffrey Drives In Game-winner In Bottom Of Ninth For 2-1 Win

April 9, 2000

Box Score

St. Louis - Erin Jeffrey hit a single to shortstop to drive in Beth Yagge for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Saint Louis University softball team rallied for a 2-1 victory over UNC Charlotte. The win was the second-straight in Conference USA action for the Billikens.

The game was a pitchers duel between SLU's Erin Jeffrey led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Beth Puttcamp. Jeffrey reached third on a fielder's choice by Janet Venorsky and scored on a UNCC error.

UNC Charlotte had a chance to take the lead in the seventh by putting the first two runners on, but Rossi set down the next three 49er batters. UNCC again put two runners on the eighth, but the Billiken defense did not allow a run to set up the ninth inning heroics. Amy Morse took the mound for UNCC in the ninth and Erin Jeffrey stepped up to the plate and lined a one-hopper deep to the hole. UNCC shortstop Kiley Scott made a nice play to stop the ball, had no play on Jeffrey and tried to throw out Yagge, but Yagge slid under the throw for the winning run.

Rossi won her fifth game of the season, struck out a season-high seven batters and worked her 14th complete game of the season. Betsy Thompson started for UNCC and pitched eight innings, allowing just one unearned run, and struck out four.

The Billikens improve to 8-25, 2-4 in C-USA on the season. UNC Charlotte dips to 10-31, 1-8 in C-USA. The Bills travel to Bradley for a doubleheader on Wed., April 12, beginning at 2 p.m.
