HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Saint Louis University softball ended its season this afternoon with a 2-0 loss to Louisville in the Conference USA Tournament. The Cardinals out-hit the Billikens 8-4 in the victory.
Louisville used a leadoff triple and two Billiken errors in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Saint Louis starter Jennifer Riva gave up two hits in the third, but kept the Cardinals off the board when centerfielder Erin Jeffrey gunned down Val Smith trying to score from second on a single. The Cardinals scored again in the fourth to go up 2-0.
The Billikens threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Beth Yagge hit a one-out double to right center. She advanced to third on a ground out by Bridget Fletcher before Cardinal hurler Mandy Rockwell got Meredith Henry to ground out to end the inning. Similarly, in the fifth, back-to-back one-out singles from Janet Venorsky and Denise Setchfield put runners on for Jamie Hayden before a double-play ended the threat.
Saint Louis finished their first season in Conference USA with a 9-43 record, five wins better than the 1999 squad.
