Baseball Knocks off SEMO in Extra Innings

May 3, 2000

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Playing their third extra-innings game in the last six outings, Saint Louis University baseball battled to a 10-9 victory over Southeast Missouri State tonight at Capaha Park. The Billikens (18-29) scored twice in the top of the tenth to grab the win, despite giving up a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Reliever Wes Jaillet (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) got the win after striking out five Indians in the final two innings.

Saint Louis saw its sixth pitcher of the game in the top of the tenth as Joe Boyer (St. Louis, Mo./Hillsboro) drew a leadoff walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Paul Miles (St. Louis, Mo./Jefferson College) reached on a fielder's choice before Kurt Evans (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Bros.) recorded the first out. Senior Brian Haddock (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) singled to load the bases for Jim Bredenkoetter (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet). The Billikens' leading hitter answered the challenge with an RBI single to centerfield. With the bases still full, Adam Shea (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet) drew a walk to drive in the insurance run. A double play ended the inning with the Bills up 10-8. Jaillet struck out the leadoff man before Jeremy Johnson put one over rightfield wall to give the Indians life. The one run was all the Billiken pitcher would yield, however, en route to his fourth win of the season.

The Billikens got off to a slow start, trailing 3-0 after three innings. The club threatened in the top of the third, but SEMO hurler Andy Davidson got a pair of strikeouts to leave men stranded on second and third. The bats came alive in the fourth, however, as a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles lead to a bases loaded plate appearance for John McLaughlin (Glencoe, Mo./Eureka). The junior rightfielder plated Bredenkoetter after getting hit by a pitch. Junior Brandon Shockley (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), returned to the diamond after missing the last 11 games with an injury, drove in Shea on a fielder's choice. Miles drew a walk to again load the bases for Evans. The sophomore leftfielder singled to plate two more runs. The Indians brought in their third pitcher of the inning, Augie Casson, who gave up another hit to Haddock that plated Miles and gave the Billikens a 5-3 lead.

Saint Louis added three more runs in the sixth with back-to-back two-out extra-base hits for Haddock and Bredenkoetter. Bredenkoetter's double plated Haddock from third before Shea drove in Bredenkoetter with a single to leftfield. McLaughlin drove in his second run of the evening with a single to right. The Indians answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead back to 8-5. Saint Louis starter Ryan Warnecke (Highland, Ill./BAC) gave up three more runs in the eighth to tie the game. Both teams went quietly in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

The Billikens are back in action on Fri., May 5, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C., to take on the UNC Charlotte 49ers at 6 p.m. (CT).
