CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
For only the fourth time this season, Saint Louis University was shut out this afternoon, 5-0 at UNC Charlotte in Conference USA baseball action. The Billikens (18-32, 5-19 C-USA) managed just six hits and never more than one in an inning.
While the 49ers got on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third, the Billikens did not even register a hit until the top of the fourth when Mike Orrico (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights) recorded a two-out single to put runners on the corners after Adam Shea (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet) drew a walk. Third baseman Brandon Shockley (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) flied out to end the inning.
Billiken starter Ben Hutton (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) gave up two more runs on five hits in the fifth. UNCC added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on Saint Louis reliever Wes Jaillet (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette). Hutton took the loss to fall to 3-5 on the season, while UNCC's John Maine got the win and is a perfect 3-0.
Only four Billikens were in scoring position the entire game, with two of them left stranded at third. The only bright spot for the Billikens at the plate was freshman Joe Boyer's (St. Louis, Mo./Hillsboro) pair of hits, including only his second career double in the top of the seventh.
Saint Louis has the week off before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series against UAB. The C-USA series begins Fri., May 12, with a 7 p.m. game at The Billiken Sports Center.
