Softball Team Earns Split Of Season-Opening Doubleheader

Nashville - The Saint Louis University softball team opened the 2001 season by splitting a doubleheader at Tennessee State on Sunday. The Lady Tigers won the first game in a 1-0 pitching duel, but the Billikens came back in the nightcap for a 10-2 romp.

In game one, Billiken shortstop Janet Venorsky led off the second inning with a triple but was thrown out in a run-down. The Bills mounted another threat in the fourth when Beth Yagge doubled with one out but was stranded by the next two hitters. Tennessee State pushed across the only run of the first game in the sixth after a walk by Antoinette Armstrong. She stole second and Jo Sharp came through with a two-out single. Nicole Bohnenstiehl gave up just one hit and struck out nine for the Billikens but took the loss in her first start for the Billikens.

In the second game, the Billikens erupted for six runs in the second inning on seven hits and eventually ended the game early via the eight-run rule. Heather Hubert tripled with one out in the second and Heather Hubert.

The Billikens are 1-1 on the season while Tennessee State falls to 3-4. Saint Louis is next in action on Thu., March 1, with a doubleheader at Tennessee-Martin beginning at 1 p.m.
