Rock Hill, S.C. -
The Saint Louis University Billiken softball team split two games at the Winthrop University Tournament on Saturday. The Billikens fell to Bowling Green by a 7-1 count but came back later in the day to defeat North Carolina A&T 7-0. With the win over NCAT, the Bills have already matched last season's victory total of nine.
Bowling Green's leadoff hitter laced a double, took third on a passed ball and scored on an infield error. The Falcons batted around in the fourth inning and used four singles, a walk and a double to stretch the lead to 6-0. Designated player Nicole Bohnenstiehl ripped a single with one out in the fifth and scored on Janet Venorsky's triple down the right field line. However, that was all the offense the Bills could muster and BGSU added a run in the sixth for the final margin.
In the North Carolina A&T game, the Billikens tacked on three runs in the first and added two runs in both the third and the fifth for an easy 7-0 decision. Erin Jeffrey led off the bottom of the first with a single and moved up after a sac bunt by Jamie Hayden and a walk by Bogaars. Bohnenstiehl drove in a run with a double and Jane Venorsky squeezed in another run. Meredith Henry lined a single up the middle for the third run in the inning. After a Hayden walk to leadoff the third, Bohnenstiehl powered up for her first home run of the season to push the margin to 5-0. In the fifth, Bogaars opening the inning with a single and Bohnenstiehl lashed a double. Henry plated both of them with a single down the right side. Bohnenstiehl struck out 12 batters, gave up just four hits and did not allow a NCAT runner to reach second base.
Nicole Bohnenstiehl was named to the All-Tournament team for the Winthrop Invitational after picking up two dominating pitching victories.
The Billikens are now 9-7 on the season. On Tuesday afternoon, the Billikens open the home portion of the 2001 schedule when they host Tennessee-Martin for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center.
