Salukis Sweep Saint Louis In Softball Action

March 29, 2001

Box Score

St. Louis - Southern Illinois swept a doubleheader from the Saint Louis University softball team 2-0 and 8-0 on Thursday at The Billiken Sports Center. The first game went extra innings with SIUC winning the contest with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Billiken pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl and Saluki hurler Erin Stremsterfer engaged in a stirring pitching duel in game one. Neither pitcher allowed a runner to reach third base in the first seven innings and Bohnenstiehl had a no-hitter through 6-1/3rd innings. Stremsterfer was just as good and limited the Bills to only three singles through seven innings. Both pitchers dominated and the international tiebreaker was instituted in the eighth inning. Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but the Salukis pushed across two runs on a hit and a SLU throwing error. The Billikens put two runners on in the ninth but did not score. Stremsterfer struck out 12 SLU batters and allowed just one walk. Bohnenstiehl also gave up only three hits, struck out 11 SIU hitters but was the hard-luck loser.

In the second game, the Salukis jumped on top with three runs in the third capped off by an RBI triple by Netty Hallahan. SIU strung together four hits in the fifth to tally another three runs and closed out the scoring with two runs in the top of the eighth. Katie Kloess permitted the Billikens just two hits and walked only one batter. Heather Hubert took the loss for SLU.

The Billikens fall to 15-14 while the Salukis improve to 19-9. Saint Louis is next in action on Sat., March 31, when DePaul visits The Billiken Sports Center for a Conference USA doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
