The DePaul Blue Demons demonstrated why they are the No. 10 team in the country by sweeping Saint Louis 9-0 and 16-1 in a doubleheader at The Billiken Sports Center on a rainy Saturday. Both league games were called after five innings.
DePaul tallied three runs in the top of the first and never let up. Liz Bouck reached on an error and stole second. Sarah Martz singled and Shavaughne Desecki hit a sac fly to plate Bouck. Martz would score on a passed ball and and and RBI groundout by Dana Jakusz scored Gina Ramacci with the third run of the first. DePaul saw seven straight batters reach and the Demons scored six runs in the third for a 9-0 margin. DePaul starter Sarah Martz held the Billikens to five hits and struck out six. Beth Puttcamp and Adrie Bogaars both managed two hits off Martz, but the rest of the Billikens went 1-for-15 against her. Martz picked up her 13th win on the year.
The Blue Demons began game two quickly with two runs in the top of the first. Martz doubled and Desecki scored her with a double. Desecki would later score on a SLU error. DePaul put the game away in the third by sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 13 runs. The big blow came on Desecki's grand slam and the Demons put together six more hits and took full advantage of four SLU errors. DePaul starter Lindsay Chouinard had a no-hitter through four innings but Billiken reserve Jessica Saucedo singled to center field to break up the bid. Chouinard struck out 11 for her 10th win of the season.
The Billikens dip to 15-16, 1-3 in Conference USA while the Demons improve to 23-7-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in C-USA action. The teams will play a sinlge game tomorrow at The Billiken Sports Center starting at 1 p.m.
